Healthy Living on a Shoestring

For many people their "Spiritual Doctor" is a religious leader. They trust this leader to give them good moral and spiritual guidance. Some are "blind faith" followers and do not have the ability, or the will, to think for themselves. Most times those who question the traditional doctrines and practices of their religion find themselves excommunicated or ostracized.

We live in a world that is greatly divided by different religious beliefs. Some have extremist factions that refuse to acknowledge, and share, their spiritual world with anyone who does not believe as they do.

In this article I will look at spiritual health from a universal point of view. I will use the assumption that we all have similar spiritual "bodies" very much like the physical bodies that we all have in common.

I am coming from the premise that we have physical hearts and "spiritual" hearts. Our physical heart controls the flow of blood to our physical body. Our spiritual heart controls our morals, values, and the flow of thoughts and actions that come from them.

Let's start with universal truths. Research has shown that feelings of love, hatred, compassion, fear, sadness etc. are generally the same for human beings all over the world. It has also been proven that kindness begets kindness, when you give love, you get love.

To me this is the basis of good spiritual health. Healthy spiritual living on a shoestring, if you will. The same way we feel when we are physically ill; we know when we are spiritually unwell. We know when we are being intolerant. We know when we are being unkind. We know when we are being unfair. We know, because our spirit tells us.

Some go from religion to religion trying to find spiritual healing. Very much like the way some change medical doctors. In many cases we can heal ourselves. We must recognize and accept the universal truth that we as human beings have more similarities, than differences. We must constantly "put ourselves in the other person's shoes". We must ask ourselves.. How would I feel if that was done to me?

For those who declare a strong belief in god and his word, this is the essence of having a good spirit. Be proactive about giving kindness. Be proactive about being compassionate. Put a "good deed" on your " To Do" list every day. This will greatly improve your spiritual health.

It's not enough to sit and meditate on being kind and loving. You have to go out and practice it. There is no shortage of people who can benefit from a smile, a kind word, or a hug.

How much would that cost you? Yes, you are feeling depressed, fearful, the bills are mounting up, and you are losing faith in the promise of a rich and abundant life. Even your spiritual budget is on a shoestring!

Spend what you can afford. Take your mind off "you". Call a friend or relative and give them some love. Send a "just thinking about you" email. Your spiritual bank account is the direct opposite of your financial bank account. The more you spend the more your account fills up. Look on the bright side and go out and spend some of that goodwill and kindness from your spiritual bank today!
